Memories of Dan Glow by Nancy Seabrook (from The Lord Nuffield Crier, Volume 46, Number 2)
Craig and I have known Dan and Rita Glow since the GOF at Mt. Snow, Vermont over 40 years ago. Rita told me that Dan saw an ad in a magazine about the meet and they decided to jump in their car and head up there to see what this MG group was about. Their RD was not yet restored so I could not associate them with a car, but they made an impression anyway. We happened to be seated at the same table for the banquet and Dan and Craig got talking and as they say, the rest was history.
Since that time we have spent many. many hours with our dear friends, the Glows. They attended the first Ohio Chapter meet and, when Rita was elected treasurer ( a job she still holds), it was fated that our paths would cross many more times. The MGs were the glue that held us together put the personalities fit too. Rita and I enjoy the same crafts, sewing, antiques, decorating, etc. and Dan and Craig love to take things apart and put them together again.
When I think of Dan, I see him showing up in a Santa costume at Christmas when Julie was only one and half years old and scaring her to tears with his Ho, Ho, Ho. He did make up for it when she was in eighth grade and he showed up and her volleyball practice and whisked her away on his motorcycle for a birthday ride. As I recall he also gave Todd a ride in the side car of one of his motorcycles one year. That was the giving spirit that was Dan.
Dan was a story teller who always managed to relate events with a smile on his face. Even when they were things that would make others really angry, Dan would always smile and chuckle about life's difficult times. He told a story one time about driving to New England in a brand new Volvo and being really upset about how it was a real dog and didn't seem to have any pep at all. Then when they arrived at their destination they were told that they had been driving against a 50 mile an hour wind the whole way to maybe the Volvo was not as bad as he thought.
Dan was a fabulous host who made sure everyone was enjoying the party. He was a good dancer, especially the polka, which he even tried to teach me at one of the (in)famous New Year's Eve parties. He would invite a large contingent of MG people to the New Year's Eve parties at the Forrest City Yacht Club where there was lots of dancing and driving and laughing and telling stories. Dan smile was always at the center of it all.
I could go on and on about the times Dan and Craig got involved in projects and asked each other for advice on how to fix this or that. However, many of you already know what a genius Dan was at fixing things and probably have stories of your own about the time Dan helped you out. So suffice it to say, Dan was a n integral part of our lives. He was a kind, giving, wonderful friend who will be missed because he made our lives better. His smile and the spirit behind that smile will be with us forever.
